How exact age is calculated
Age counts completed calendar units: you turn "30" only when your 30th birthday arrives. The calculator subtracts dates column by column — years, then months, then days — borrowing from the next unit when needed, exactly the way you'd do it by hand. Someone born on 15 March 1995 is, on 26 July 2026: 31 years, 4 months, 11 days old.
Leap years are handled automatically: the total-days figure counts every actual calendar day, including February 29ths, and dividing by 7 gives exact weeks.
Age milestones in total days
| Milestone | Age it happens |
|---|---|
| 1,000 days | ~2 years 9 months |
| 5,000 days | ~13 years 8 months |
| 10,000 days | ~27 years 4½ months |
| 15,000 days | ~41 years 1 month |
| 20,000 days | ~54 years 9 months |
| 25,000 days | ~68 years 5 months |
| 30,000 days | ~82 years 1½ months |
Ten thousand days — around age 27⅓ — passes almost nobody's notice, which is exactly why day-counting makes for memorable celebrations.
Different systems count age differently
This tool uses the international convention (age 0 at birth, +1 each birthday). Traditional East Asian reckoning started at one and incremented at New Year; South Korea officially switched to international age in 2023. Some legal contexts also differ: in several jurisdictions you legally reach an age at the start of the day before your birthday — worth checking when a cutoff really matters.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate age from a date of birth by hand?
Subtract the birth year from the current year, then subtract one more if this year's birthday hasn't happened yet. For months and days, borrow like in subtraction: if the day number is smaller, borrow the previous month's length in days; if the month is smaller, borrow 12 months from the year.
What happens if I was born on February 29?
You age normally — one year per calendar year. In common years, most jurisdictions treat March 1 (or legally February 28 in some places, such as New Zealand) as the birthday for age-based rules. This calculator counts leap-day birthdays against the next occurring February 29 or March 1.
How many days old am I?
Enter your birth date and the calculator shows your age in total days, weeks, and hours. A 30-year-old has lived roughly 10,957 days, or about 263,000 hours.
Can I calculate age at a date in the past or future?
Yes — set the 'Age at this date' field. This answers questions like 'how old will I be on 1 September 2030?' or 'how old was my grandfather in 1970?', which is exactly how school-entry cutoffs and pension dates are checked.
Why do two age calculators disagree by one day?
Almost always time zones or inclusive counting: some tools count the end date as a full day, or run in a different time zone's 'today'. This calculator counts completed days in your local calendar, which matches the everyday meaning of age.
